Doctor of Education

Ed.D. Professional Doctorate Overview
The Doctor of Education at Trinity is a professional degree designed to develop educational leaders through an interdisciplinary curriculum based on a biblical worldview. The Ed.D. consists of 12 hours of qualifying core courses, 12 hours of general core courses, and 24 hours of specialization core courses. After course work is completed, students write an applied dissertation in the specialization area.

Through core course work, students explore leading-edge and cutting-edge principles and practices across fields of knowledge such as biblical studies, theology, philosophy, counseling, education, leadership, ministry, etc. Through the analysis of precedent literature and current issues and trends in a specialized area of study, students discern how to interpret and respond to contemporary theories and practices, and how to deploy their knowledge, understanding, and skills to meet the challenges of tomorrow. Collectively, the core courses and specialized core studies provide students with the opportunity to advance their personal abilities and professional goals.

Qualifying Examination
The Qualifying Examination is scheduled after a student has completed the 12 hours of qualifying core course work, and before continuing on in the program of study. This insures the student is ready to continue doctoral level work prior to investing additional resources in a program they would be unable to complete. The examination is a written exam consisting of one line of inquiry, broadly defined, from each of the qualifying core courses. Upon passing the Qualifying Exam, the student is advanced to full admission status, and can enroll in the general core and specialization core courses.

Comprehensive Examination
The Comprehensive Examination is scheduled after a student has completed the 12 hours of general core and 24 hours of specialization core course work, and before researching and writing the applied research dissertation. This insures the student is ready to continue doctoral level work prior to investing additional resources in a program they would be unable to complete. The examination is a written exam consisting of one line of inquiry, broadly defined, from each of the core courses. Students will be given all of the questions for purposes of preparation, but will only be given four to write upon from that list. The examination also includes a fifth question related to the potential applied research dissertation topic. Upon passing the Comprehensive Exam, the student is advanced to degree candidacy status, and can only then enroll in the applied research course for the writing of the dissertation.

Applied Dissertation
An Ed.D. student must successfully complete an applied research dissertation under the supervision of a Dissertation Committee. The dissertation will take a minimum of one year to complete, and earns 12 hours toward the program of study. A Dissertation Committee is appointed by the appropriate Trinity Department Chair and the Doctoral Studies Committee.

Applied dissertation research is designed to expand the knowledge of the field in the specialized area of study, and to demonstrate that the degree candidate is capable of conducting independent scholarly analysis and implementation of research findings in ministry context.
